King Krule: The Sublunary Collection
Sublunary can be defined as: 1) situated between the moon or between the earth and moon. 2) belonging to this world as contrasted with a better or more spiritual one.
The Sublunary collection is a curated set of 3 CD’s featuring music from King Krule. The visual thesis for this set is “disorienting liminality,” as King Krule’s music can best be described as punk jazz, with dreamlike, spacey, and grim lyrics. Each CD focuses on one of the three motifs King Krule uses throughout his lyrics: city, moon, and water. The city represents mundane, everyday life. The moon is an escape; a dream. Water represents a low point, or slipping back into old habits. Within this set is also a lyric booklet, containing an essay about my personal connection to the music, photographs of King Krule, and complete lyrics to each featured song.
Each CD case cover is designed with an upside down photograph taken on a 35mm film camera to create a dreamlike and disorienting feeling. Abstract sketches overlay each photo to distort the image further and relate to the often chaotic feeling of the instrumentals. These sketches can also be found on the CD labels and within the lyric booklet. The entire set is monochromatic blue, as the subject matter of King Krule’s lyrics are typically sad and lonely.
The box was made out of mylar, a translucent, cloudy material. The contents of the box can faintly be seen from the outside, relating to this liminal, transitional space. The contents can be seen better as you handle the box, pushing each plane inwards, creating an interesting experience as information is partially revealed.
